Organic Agriculture in Vietnam
By the first 6 months of 2024, Vietnam has approximately 194,555 hectares of organic farming area (according to data collected by VOAA), about 0.7% of the total agricultural land area. The market shows many positive signs, with increasing demand for organic products evidenced by the growth in imports of EU- and USDA-certified organic products in Europe and the United States, as well as an increase in the number of safe and organic food stores and chains.
Following the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), Vietnam has implemented various programs to achieve green growth objectives. In December 2023, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development issued two decisions: Decision No. 5190/QĐ-BNN-BVTV approving the Project on Development of Organic Fertilizer Production and Utilization until 2030, with a vision towards 2050, and Decision No. 5415/QĐ-BNN-BVTV approving the Project on Development of Biological Plant Protection Products until 2030, with a vision towards 2050. However, these documents appear not to be closely linked with the National Organic Agriculture Development Project 2020-2030, which was issued in 2020 and aims to increase organic agricultural area to 2.5-3% by 2030.
Through its collaborative activities, the Vietnam Organic Agriculture Association (VOAA) continues to promote communication, training, and awareness-raising among stakeholders in the organic product chain, while strengthening activities to support organic trade promotion, aiming to create market-driven momentum to pull production growth.
